About Fiona

Art Director, design consultant and lecturer Fiona Hayes studied graphic design and art history in her native Dublin, Ireland. She started her career at Radio Times in London and has art directed Punch, Company, Eve and the British and Russian editions of Cosmopolitan. For Condé Nast, she has been art director of British House & Garden, GQ India, and Russian Vogue – twice. She spent two and a half years in Munich, art directing Myself magazine for Condé Nast Germany. Between 2013 and 2019, she oversaw all of the launches of Condé Nast International – 14 magazines, including seven editions of Vogue. She still consults as design director at large for Vogue Hong Kong.

In 2002 she founded independent photography magazine DayFour, publishing it continuously until 2012.

Outside the publishing world, she has been art director of contemporary art auction house Phillips de Pury in London and New York, and consultant art director for Russian luxury retail group Mercury/TSUM. Current clients range from a multinational luxury beverages group to a boutique publishing organisation in South Africa. She is co-author and art director/designer of The Fashion Yearbook  (@thefashionyearbook_official), an annual compilation of the best international editorial and advertising imagery.

She is an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, leading a module on Professional Practice for the Photography BA course. As an Associate Lecturer and Supervisor at Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design, London, she works with MA students on creative direction and luxury brand management. She is also a Supervisor for fashion MA students at Nottingham Trent University, and delivers an annual lecture at Leeds University entitled “Legacy Publishing in a Digital World.”
