What do you do for a living?

I am the founder and editor of Garden Party Magazine, a photography-led publication focusing on small, tender moments and quiet visual storytelling.

As a one-woman show trying to turn her passion into a full-time occupation, by day, I’m a full-time veterinary receptionist and by night, magazine extraordinaire.

What does this mean day-to-day?

It means waking up, checking emails/socials for Garden Party, replying to anything urgent and then spending the next 9 hours of the day helping animals. I return home, somehow full of energy to attend to my magazine, that’s how I know I’m doing something right.

Oh, and I try to eat and exercise too, to stay sane and mobile. My other dedication is toward not developing a chronic hunchback from the revolting amount of hours I can spend at a computer every day. (It’s all in love, though).

What do you love about magazines?

There are many elements of creation that I enjoy, and from years of exploring them as separate entities, I discovered they all have to co-exist in one space when making a magazine. I love the depth of curation, layout and formatting. Everything from typography to deciding the cover.

Making a magazine requires a deeper amount of attention, unlike anything I’ve practised. When it’s done well, you can tell it’s an art people really care about the decisions they make. When something has been so well-thought-out it’s almost like placing a puzzle together piece by piece as you go through it. I think that’s my favourite thing. Separate elements of design and curation coming together to make a magazine feel whole.

Tell us one thing not many people know about you?

I’m a huge music lover, I mean, who isn’t, but on a deeper level, it inspires me greatly and helps me get into the mood and mindset to write or create. I’m always listening to something when I’m doing just about anything.

Right now, I’m unashamedly listening to Honest by Justin Bieber. Whatever hypes you up on a Thursday morning, right? Another secret in a secret is I
love rap/hip-hop. I think that’s surprising, looking at my content.

Where can we connect with you?

In-person is great if it’s geographically viable! Email and Instagram are the next best thing.
