And will be speaking about Reframing Place: How independent publishing can change the stories we tell about place

About Maddy’s talk

Through Alright Pet Press, I’m exploring how independent publishing can reshape the way we think about place. Many communities in the North East are portrayed negatively through the media, and those stories can influence how people feel about where they live and the people around them. I’ll talk about using photography, design and print to tell different stories. Ones that celebrate creativity, community and everyday life and how culture has the power to build pride, hope and a stronger sense of belonging.

About Maddy

Maddy Bays is a graphic designer and independent publisher from the North East of England. While studying Graphic Design at the Glasgow School of Art, she developed Brand New Day, the first publication from Alright Pet Press. Her work uses photography, writing and print to question how places are represented, and how independent publishing can offer a different perspective. Through stories from the North East, she aims to make work that is rooted in people, place and optimism.
