25th September 2024 – Edinburgh
We’re getting the magazine chat flowing early this year at our Magazine Street Pre-Party 🥳
Join us from 6.30pm at Le Monde’s Dirty Martini Bar for our panel session with five of our Magazine Street speakers.
About our panel
Hosted by Peter Houston, co-founder of The Grub Street Journal, and kindly sponsored by the PPA, our panel will be discussing all-things-sustainability.
From changing the world through magazines from Rachel Arthur at Boom Saloon, to what it’s like working for a B-corp from Louise Ioannou at Nat Geo Kids; from how to communicate your sustainability work from Jodie Newman at The Business Allotment, to working towards Net Zero from David Bostock at the PPA.
About our speakers
Peter Houston is the publisher of The Grub Street Journal – a magazine for magazine people – and The Magazine Diaries, a weekly newsletter on making print magazines work in a digital world. As co-founder of Media Voices, he regularly interviews senior media professionals striving to survive in a hostile media landscape.
Peter fervently believes there is a future for print in the magazine media portfolio. However, he thinks the only way to get there as an industry is to stage an intervention, an honest acknowledgement of the challenges we face with our oldest format. Only then will the magazine business be able to take full advantage of new opportunities in print and create a sustainable way forward.
Rachel Arthur is the Founder and Editor of boom saloon – a global media movement to democratise creativity for good, driven by its international members. boom saloon explores the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of creativity, across print publications, online features, newsletters and events.
Profits from these fund a series of community projects which inspire and empower those facing challenges – to date, using creativity to nurture and unlock talents overshadowed by challenges of substance abuse, homelessness, inequality, forcible displacement and dementia.
Louise Ioannou is the Marketing Director of Nat Geo Kids at Creature & Co, where she leads the team responsible for driving subscriptions across UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Creature & Co is a B Corp certified agency, dedicated to delivering purpose-driven creative and strategy. It’s their mission to inform, inspire and empower people to act on the world’s challenges through engaging and accurate storytelling and experiences.
Jodie Newman is the founder of The Business Allotment. Passionate about sustainability, Jodie comes with tips to help communicate your sustainability work.
The Allotment is where business owners come to find creative strategies for growth, great ideas to create fresh, practical approaches to their business challenges and where Jodie helps them move from ‘business as usual’ thinking to ‘business as unusual’ thinking.
David Bostock is Membership Manager at the PPA, and works alongside their Sustainability Group Chair to deliver the PPA Action Net Zero Pathway, which moves into its second phase later this year with the release of six reports.
These will bring much-needed industry standardisation of the methodologies used for calculating greenhouse gas inventories across multi-platform publishing businesses.
